The Emergency Support Team (EST) is a student-run volunteer organization that operates 24/7 and services Washington University’s campus with any medical emergency. Each member is a Missouri licensed EMT-B and CPR certified and are required to provide the same level of care as other state EMS agencies. Given that we are a volunteer agency, EST is a completely free service for all students who decide to call.

We operate our truck, loaded with 5 bags filled with medical equipment to handle a variety of call categories, and work with Clayton paramedics for specific medical emergencies. As well, we get dispatched through WUPD by dialing 314-935-555. Our total number of calls on average is 300 and continues to grow each year.

All members of EST are certified in CPR, and all members are certified or in the progress of becoming certified basic life support emergency medical technicians (EMT-B). At least two of the three techs are senior techs, who in addition to the training required for an EMT-B license receive months of internal training that hones their abilities to provide a high level of care to the Danforth campus patient population. As a result, our duty crews are adept in providing first responder care to any medical emergency, e.g. cardiac, respiratory, intoxication, drug abuse, orthopedic, diabetic, severe bleeding, head injury, and any major trauma.

Our board team, administrators, and clinical advisors from the medical school are in constant communication to ensure updated medical practice for the best quality care for those who call. During larger events that the university hosts, like our campus wide concert WILD, EST participates under an incident command structure to maintain utmost safety to all students, staff, and employees throughout the day.

EST also engages in public health initiatives by providing CPR classes with our AHA certified CPR instructors, BLS classes, and Stop the Bleed Classes. Find our CPR resources for more information.
